Province hosts open house for massive Springbank flood project

Province hosts open house for massive Springbank flood project

by Annalise Klingbeil, Calgary Herald, Jan 27, 2015

Springbank residents blasted the government on Tuesday evening at the first public consultation for a controversial reservoir proposed for Springbank that’s designed to mitigate Elbow River flooding.

The government says the proposed Springbank off-stream reservoir, located west of the city, would control flow rates of the Elbow River during a flood, protecting Calgary residents and property from future flooding.

But Springbank residents say the project will negatively impact their community and they insist there are better options available for flood mitigation.

Room for the river report moves focus beyond big infrastructure

Colette Derworiz, Calgary Herald, Jan 12, 2014

Giving the province’s rivers more room to grow by revisiting property buyouts, preventing future floodplain development and wid
ening riverbanks is an effective way to both mitigate future floods and manage watersheds, according to a new report.

The study, which was submitted to the province in late December, involved input from water managers, watershed groups, municipalities, environmental groups, experts and the interested public.

It examined an approach called Room for the River — used in the Netherlands as an effective way to manage high water levels along its rivers by giving them more room — after former environment minister Robin Campbell visited Holland and asked for a report on whether similar concepts could work in Alberta.

Stalled talks with landowners could push Springbank reservoir opening to 2019

Stalled talks with landowners could push Springbank reservoir opening to 2019

by Trevor Howell, Calgary Herald, Jan 7, 2015

".... But four months later, discussions to grant provincial officials access to landowners’ properties to conduct required environmental impact assessments, appear to have hit an impasse.

“While discussions have occurred with the government, at this point we have no news to share, because landowners and residents haven’t received any new information on the government’s plan,” Ryan Robinson, one of roughly two dozen affected landowners and spokesman for dontdamnspringbank.com, said in an email. “We hope to get an updated version of the project plan soon.”...

Author Alanna Mitchell transforms science into storytelling in Sea Sick

by Stephen Hunt, Calgary Herald, Jan 7, 2015

How does a non-performer transform her non-fiction show into a genuine performance?

That was the dilemma facing Alanna Mitchell, a former Globe & Mail science reporter, as she laboured through an earlier Toronto run of Sea Sick, her solo show that opens Thursday night as part of the 2015 High Performance Rodeo.

The show, adapted from Mitchell’s critically-acclaimed non-fiction book, Sea Sick: The Global Ocean in Crisis takes the audience on Mitchell’s journey — as a prairie-raised (Regina) landlubber who sets out to explore how humankind has impacted our oceans.

Sea Sick is a powerful and deeply personal solo performance by Alanna Mitchell. The show is adapted from her best-selling book, Sea Sick: The Global Ocean in Crisis, which won the prestigious U.S.-based Grantham Prize for excellence in environmental journalism.

Charismatic, passionate and articulate, the award-winning Mitchell discovers the secrets of the ocean, faces the demons of the deeps and finds hope.

Mitchell has told the inspirational and often humorous story of her journey into the ocean to enraptured TEDx audiences, among others.
