Bow River Fishing Report - from August 28 2012

"Fishing was pretty good on tuesday (28th). Three of us did really well. Better then what i was expecting for august. I was the only one in the boat that didnt fish an indicator all day.

Caddis were popping every now and then, and tricos were happening in the slow water. Lots of fish taking emerging bugs in the typical classic dry fly water. Hoppers in size 6-8 + Caddis dropper was the ticket for sure.

On the nymphing end of things, hares ears, boatmen, and size 18-22 tung studs/trico nymphs worked well, along with the same droppers fished beneath the hopper.

I had a blast catching quite a few rainbows in the 17-20" range on the hopper along with a possible personal best rainbow that spit the hook. This brown was the fish of the day and taped at 25". Had more then 15 fish to the boat, with many others hooked and lost.

Clarity at best was probably 4', it got somewhat dirtier further down.

Best part of the trip was getting to bring Grandpa along for his first float, he just wanted to see the river and experience the surroundings!

Everyone had a good time!

Tight Lines"

Bassist ready to get bumped

Silversun Pickups guitarist on tour while expecting twins

Mike Bell,
Calgary Herald
Thursday, August 30, 2012

The best way to hide a baby bump? The bass.

Well, for a few weeks anyway.

And then, admits Nikki Monninger, it's time to announce the big news, lest someone speculate you've been hogging the band rider all to yourself.

"I'm just starting to show, so we had to say something," laughs Mon-ninger, the bassist for California pop-rock act Silversun Pickups, who spilled the baby beans the day before. "I think in Kansas City, there were some questions. Not that I would mind if people said I was fat."

Making it all the more imperative is the fact that the musician is pregnant with not one but two future roadies - twin girls. That means that she'll be getting a whole lot bigger and her time out on the road will be winding down quite soon, with Sarah Negahdari from the band The Happy Hollows waiting in the wings to temporarily take her place as the Pickups continue to promote their recently released album Neck of the Woods.

Bow River Report –August 28, 2012

Trico fishing has been pretty stellar the last few days. Lots of fish rising in some pretty cool places. Thankfully our fish will eat a low profile CDC Caddis or a small Ant so we don’t have to use ridiculously little bugs we can’t see.

There are a ton of fish up on bars right. A small Hopper/Chernobyl pattern will often work. Or, if the dry doesn’t do the trick, hang a small bead under the dry. They can’t resist.

Hopper fishing has been, overall, very good. The afternoons have been better and it seems to happen in waves. You’ll rise a bunch of fish on Hoppers in one area, the next area very few and you start thinking you should change, and then it turns up again.

Cloudy days still produce insane rising fish on Pseudos, etc. The streamer fishing is also best on the dark days.

Hatches: Hoppers, Caddis, Tricos, Pseudos on the cloudy days

Streamers: Slap-N-Tickle, C/H R/L Bugger-Black, Egg Stealing Super Sculpin

Nymphs: Tung Stud, Peacock Water Boatman, TB Biotic Nymph

Dry Flies: Frankenhopper, Yeager’s Hopper, Slice Above Hopper, Bloom’s CDC Caddis, Glitter Flag Ant

Expo Latino takes festival-goers on the pursuit for passion

By Stephen Hunt,
Calgary Herald, Calgary Herald
August 21, 2012

Carmen Galvez doesn’t only book flamenco dancers, she is a flamenco dancer.

The artistic director of Expo Latino, back this week for its 16th year, is on the phone, explaining the appeal of a regional Spanish dance that connects to people everywhere.

“It’s the passion,” Galvez says.

She may be talking specifically about flamenco, but is there any doubt those three little words could just as easily serve as the tag line for the entire Expo Latino?

Whether it’s flamenco, Argentine tango, salsa or malambo, there is a stunning amount of Latin dance on display. Whether it’s a return visit by Saturday night’s headlining outfit, Grupo Mania — which set off a flurry of requests for return visits from Expo Latino patrons who watched them blaze through their appearance at the 2011 festival — or else an appearance by Chilean heartthrob Americano, the operative word throughout is passion.

A blooming problem - Wetland loss major factor in algae problem in Alberta lakes

Ducks Unlimited Canada: Letter to the Editor

A blooming problem - Wetland loss major factor in algae problem in Alberta lakes

By Perry McCormick
Manager of Provincial Operations in Alberta
Ducks Unlimited Canada

Stonewall, Man., Aug 2, 2012 — Dear Editor: Over the last few weeks, water quality issues have been surfacing throughout Alberta. Some lakes, most recently Pigeon Lake, are being negatively impacted by algae blooms, which has placed them under algae advisories. This greatly impacts summer recreational activities that normally take place at these lakes, can be lethal to fish stocks and could even start influencing property values on the affected lakes.

The questions on everyone's minds are - why is this happening and how can it be stopped?

Some blame the water quality issues on development, farm run-off, sewage run-off and dropping water levels. But, what you might not know is that wetlands, including marshes and ponds, play a significant role in the water quality of our lakes and rivers.

Boyd Schlenker 1975-2012

Boyd Schlenker

We were saddened to learn of the untimely death of Boyd Schlenker. Boyd will be missed by many in the fly fishing community.

Randy Seitz, Cypress Fly Fishing Club, sent an email of condolence to Brent Schlenker, the father of Boyd Schlenker. Here is part of the reply he received from Brent:

"Boyd was actually the originator of Cypress Fly Fishing and had the idea of having a fly fishing club part of our company. His vision has brought several good seminars and fishing experts to our small city. He was so enthusiastic to create this opportunity to have others join him and learn of the many fish and destinations that were at reach for all of us including myself.

This concept was put into action and the most wonderful relationships and fishing opportunities were born"

Bow River Report –August 20, 2012

Pretty decent fishing over the last several days, other than the massive water drop last Wednesday, that wasn’t so good.

Hopper fishing has been pretty good, we’re seeing more Caddis, and Tricos are getting going!

Like always, the lower light (cloudy) days will fish easier.

Hatches: Hoppers, Caddis, PMD’s, Tricos, Pseudos on the cloudy days

Streamers: Slap-N-Tickle, C/H R/L Bugger-Black, Egg Stealing Super Sculpin

Nymphs: Tung Stud, Peacock Water Boatman, TB Biotic Nymph

Dry Flies: Berrett’s Golden Stone-Barred Leg, Frankenhopper, Slice Above Hopper, Bloom’s CDC Caddis, Glitter Flag Ant
